I have had the craziest week-end ever. It definitely wasn't planned this way; but it ended up being a bit of a funny story, so I figured I'd type it up so y'all can be entertained as well. :)
Normally weekends don't start on Fridays but this time mine did! We left the house about 9 in the morning to drive the 6 hours down to Illinois to meet up with my roommate. We were gonna be flying out together the next day. Nothing happened on that leg of the trip to indicate how the rest of the trip would go. We arrived in Fulton, IL, around the middle of the afternoon. As soon as my family had left, Sarah and I ran out the door to go say goodbye to some of her friends. THAT was quite the evening! We went dirt-biking down their icy driveway after dark; drove the truck out into the hayfield to get motion-sick drifting; and had tickle fights. We lay on the floor, battling each other with arm muscles alone; having a grand old time laughing at each other. Overall, it was a great night! We even experienced a silly-string storm as we said our goodbyes and were chased to the car. Thankfully, it comes off pretty easy. :)
Saturday dawned beautifully, the sun rising behind falling snowflakes. There's a hint right there. Our flight was delayed due to that snow. It wasn't a disaster though. We got re-booked for the next day and went back to Sarah's house to watch movies all afternoon. We were just a bit disappointed that we couldn't get back to school.
Sunday morning we were up bright and early, hoping for the best! We checked the website before leaving for the hour drive to the airport. However, as soon as we arrived at the airport, we were told our flight was canceled. Again. *sighs* You can imagine how we felt by now. This time when we re-booked, the lady at the counter said we wouldn't be able to get out of the area for at least 2 days. NOT exactly what we wanted to hear. We asked her to check Chicago airports to find a flight from there even though we would have a long drive to get to Chicago. It was that or wait 2 days, which neither Sarah nor I wanted to do. So we booked a flight from Chicago and drove BACK to Sarah's. We grabbed lunch and began the drive to Chicago. But of course we had bad roads and it took almost twice as long to get there as it should have. (Are you getting the gist of the story yet?) Needless to say, we were exhausted. And bored. So we called a classmate who was fun to talk to and drained his phone battery, passing it around to everyone and occupying ourselves with being annoying. :P We finally arrived at her uncle's house and went to bed early.
Monday morning we woke up at 3am. But we didn't get up until 3:30. :) Got to the O'Hare airport at 5am and actually made it through security this time! We hadn't been very optimistic about getting out. About 90% of the flights on the information board showed "cancellation" after the number. We made it to the gate and sat down. And we sat. And we sat some more. And guess what? We sat some more. Somehow our pilot had gotten "lost" and no one could find him. So they had to find a replacement and wait for him to arrive and blah blah blah. We were about 2 hours late at that point. FINALLY boarded the plane. Then we sat some more. See, while we were waiting in the terminal for a pilot, the pipes on the plane had frozen and they had to thaw them out before we could take off. Well that took about another hour but eventually we did make it off the ground. Praise God for little blessings, right? That wasn't the end of it though. We made it to Denver just in time to miss our connecting flight to Jackson Hole. We hurried off the plane, hoping against all our previous experience, that a miracle would happen and the flight would have been delayed. The miracle happened! It had been delayed a half hour giving us about 10 minutes to run through the airport, catching it just on time. We were astounded. Definitely weren't expecting to make the flight. You'll forgive our lack of faith. :) But it's not over yet! Upon arriving in Jackson, we discovered that while WE had made the tight connection in Denver...our luggage had not. We have it now though, 7 hours later.
4 days in transit -- hours in cars and airports and planes -- exhaustion...but we made it. :) I do have one question though...what is so important here at college that so many people have been delayed in returning? They even canceled class today because of it. I know there's a war going on in this world and I don't believe in coincidence. Someday I'd love to hear God's side of my crazy weekend...
