The first step to obtaining wisdom is just to be exposed to the truth of God. Next, you need to understand the truth of God. However, most of us get stuck in the "ignorance gap" between these two steps. We don't see the difference between just knowing and fully understanding the Scriptures. How do we bridge the gap?
1) study it -- 2 Timothy 2
2) make an effort -- Proverbs 2
Once we bridge the gap into understanding, the final step is to apply the truth of God. Once again though we must bridge a gap -- this time it's a "delusion gap". You'd think that understanding the Scriptures would make us wise right? But what good is understanding without applying? James says that "to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin." In order to be truly wise, we must cross this gap as well.
1) trials force us to apply our knowledge -- James 1
2) we have a model to follow in Christ -- Philippians 2
If we follow these steps in the fear (reverence) of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7) then we will become wise. God promises in James 1:5 that He gives wisdom to all men liberally who ask for it in faith. That's a promise.
The rewards of walking in the Lord's wisdom:
1) wisdom provides a moral safeguard for our lives
2) we will live in the “land” of rest and blessing
3) God will guide us (Psalm 25:12)
4) He will give us mental/ spiritual/ physical health
5) we avoid many negatives, such as fear
6) God commits to care for us
You will find it is a profitable thing to learn wisdom and apply it...
